After the afternoon session: Lecture about "Karst and Classical Karst"
by Prof. Franco Cucchi and Dr. Luca Zini, presented by Dr. Giuliana Franceschini.
Department of Geological, Environmental and Marine Sciences of the University of Trieste.

The lection will be followed by "cheese and wine".

Afternoon and evening: Half-day excursion to Aquileia and Grado, followed by the Workshop Banquet.

Excursion: A tour through the ruins of the ancient Aquileia, the fourth biggest Roman town at the time of Emperor Augustus, and in particular to its harbour. Visit of the magnificent Romanesque basilica of Aquileia and its crypt, famous for the largest mosaic of the early Christian era. Walk through the little island of Grado, one of the best seaside resorts of the Adriatic sea, famous for the gold sand beach and its ancient centre.

First part of the afternoon: short excursion either to (1) Miramare Castle and Park or to (2) "Grotta Gigante" Karst cave (*); the participants will choose between options (1) and (2).

Excursion (1): Visit of the Miramare Castle, which has become the symbol of Trieste. It is the most-visited state-owned museum in Italy. It was built between 1856 and 1860 on a beautiful promontory in the Grignano bay to become the residence of Archduke Maximilian of Austria, the Emperor of Mexico.

The castle, whose white towers were sung by the Italian poet Carducci, is a Romantic version of a medieval fortification facing the sea. The castle is surrounded by a 22 hectare park, which includes English and Italian gardens with rare plants, sculptures and ponds.

Excursion (2): Visit of the Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave) of the Karst surrounding Trieste, the largest cave open to tourists in the world. It is an extraordinary 107 m high, 160 m long and 65 m wide hall: Saint Peter's Cathedral in Rome can be contained inside. The cave, formed by water erosion, is famous for its stalagmites and stalactites. It houses various scientific instruments like a huge geodetic pendulum to measure earth tides, and a set of seismographs.

Cocktail party at Caffè Tommaseo. The Caffè Tommaseo in Piazza Tommaseo 4/c lies close to the famous Piazza Unità d'Italia and to the Communal Theatre Giuseppe Verdi in one of the most prestigious areas of Trieste. As a coffe-house it is the oldest in Trieste and belongs to the Association of the italian historical inns.

Opened in 1830 by the paduan Tommaso Marcato, it was decorated by the painter Gatteri and furnished with large mirrors, purposely brought from Belgium. On behalf of the new owner Society in december 1997 the café was restored and renewed in the style of the original tradition of the Vienna cafés.

Concert in San Giusto. The Cathedral of San Giusto was built on the ruins of a Holy Roman building and on those of an Early Christian one (5th century). It is now a harmonius complex of buildings derived from the union of two Romanesque churches dating back to the 9th and 11th centuries.

It has a 14th century facade with a majestic rose windows. The mosaics of the apses of Assunta and San Giusto, dating back to the 12th-13th centuries, are among the most promiment works of the art of the church. The bell-tower was built between 1337 and 1343. Nearby there is the fine Baptistery of San Giovanni, built in 1380 on the ruins of the Early Christian baptistery.
